In Memory of Jake Dybiec

It is with great sadness that we notify our alumni, faculty, staff, students as well as the broader community, that one of our graduate students, Jacob “Jake” Dybiec of Cleveland, OH passed away unexpectedly on Monday, July 3, 2023. A graduate student in the College of Arts & Sciences, Jake was pursuing a Ph.D. in Biology and had advanced to candidacy. A team member in the Cherry Wetland Ecology Lab, Jake was previously awarded a Graduate Council Fellowship and served as a research assistant for the Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant. Most recently, Jake was selected for the 2022-2024 cohort of the NOAA Margaret A. Davidson Graduate Fellowship, which provided Jake the opportunity to conduct research in Fairhope, Alabama, on the interactive effects of nutrient enrichment and wave action on marsh resilience at the Weeks Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve. Prior to joining UA, Jake received his M.S. in Biology from Central Michigan University and his B.S. in Environmental Science from John Carroll University.

On behalf of the family and friends of Jake Dybiec, the Department of Biological Sciences will be hosting a memorial service this Tuesday (July 11th) from 1:00 to 3:00 pm in John H. England Jr. Hall Room A on the bottom floor. This building is located on the corner of 2nd St and McCorvey Dr next to Lakeside Dining and near the northeast corner of the Ferguson parking lot. This is directly across the Ferguson Student Center parking lot from the entrance to the Bevill Building. Please join us as we pay tribute to Jake.
