Mitchell named Outstanding Undergraduate
Jessica Mitchell, a recent UA graduate and McNair Undergraduate Research Scholar in Dr. Steve Marcus’s lab, was a recipient of the 2010 Randall Outstanding Undergraduate Research Award. Jessica is now a Ph.D. student in the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Graduate Program at the University of Georgia.
McInnis awarded Graduate Council Fellowship
Brittney McInnis, a Ph.D. student in Dr. Steve Marcus’s lab, was awarded a Graduate Council Research Fellowship for the 2010-2011 academic year.
Extinct mollusc named for Graf
A genus of extinct bivalve molluscs has been named for Dan Graf. In the article (Van Damme, D & Pickford M (2010) Geo-Pal Uganda 2:1-121) the authors write: “Etymology. Named in honour after Professor Dan Graf (University of Alabama) for his important contribution to the knowledge of freshwater bivalves in general and the African ones in particular.”
Jenny to study stress responses from oil spill
Dr. Matt Jenny will study the impact of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill by examining stress responses in the sea anemone Nematostella vectensis. The research is funded by a Rapid Response Grant from the National Science Foundation.
