Brook Fluker won 2nd Place for Best Oral Presentation at the Annual Southeastern Fishes Council Meeting in Chattanooga, TN (10-11 Nov 2011). Brook’s talk was entitled, “Spring-adapted species as a model for understanding the genetic consequences of aquatic habitat fragmentation.”

College highlights research activities of four Biological Sciences scientists
The College of Arts and Sciences has highlighted the work of four UA biologists for recent publications. Drs. Guy and Kim Caldwell were co-authors on a recent paper in the journal Science concerning Alzheimer’s Disease. Dr. Stephen Secor’s work, also published in Science, concerns cardiac hypertrophy and its regulation by fatty acids. Dr. Jennifer Sheridan’s work, published in Nature Climate Change, concerns the reduction in size of a wide variety of animals and plants, a response to climate change.

John Pfeiffer wins best poster award
John Pfeiffer, graduate student with Dan Graf, won the best student poster award at the annual meeting of the American Malacological Society in Pittsburgh. Caldwell lab determines mechanism of action of torsinA
The laboratory of Guy and Kim Caldwell and collaborators at Harvard University have discovered that the protein torsinA, mutations which are implicated in dystonia, participates in protein folding in the endoplasmic reticulum. This finding has implications for other genetic diseases, including cystic fibrosis. Link to video here.
