Marcus lab students Elan Strange and Lacey Kennedy earn first place awards for presentations at scientific conference

Two student researchers in Dr. Stevan Marcus’s lab, Elan Strange (M.S. student) and Lacey Kennedy (B.S. student), earned first place awards for their presentations at the 2017 Southeastern Regional Yeast Meeting. Elan earned first place in the graduate student oral presentation category for his talk entitled “The CDP-ethanolamine branch of the Kennedy Pathway plays a critical role in cytoprotective responses to the tumoricidal triterpenoid glycoside avicin G in the fission yeast, Schizosaccharomyces pombe”. Dr. Katrina Ramonell recognized with the Morris L Mayer Award

Associate Professor Katrina Ramonell has been presented with the Morris L Mayer Award, which recognizes a member of the faculty who exemplifies the life of Dr. Morris L. Mayer: selfless and significant service and leadership for the UA community and significant contributions to student life and integrity. Dr. Ramonell was recognized on Honors Day 2017 for her tireless efforts in curriculum planning, student academic planning and career advising. Congratulations Katrina!

Graduate student Brandon Hill attends conference with Nobel laureates

Biological Sciences doctoral student Brandon Hill is attending this week a conference featuring 37 Nobel Prize winners, in Lindau Germany. The conference will feature lectures and workshops by the laureates. Hill was selected to attend as one of 600 graduate students from 80 countries. He is working in the laboratory of Dr. Carol Duffy.

Professor John Clark writes, concerning his Alabama in Ecuador Tropical Plant Diversity class: “We completed a quantitative study of canopy trees in a recently established reserve (EcoMinga’s Rio Zunac).  Some highlights include the collection of three different species of Mangolia and significant range extensions of canopy tree species.
