Each year, the College of Arts and Sciences has a tent on the quad during the pre-homecoming football game festivities. As always, Biological Sciences was there this year to share our research with students and the public. We couldn’t do it without our amazing graduate students and their enthusiasm for science!
The McCollough Institute for Pre-Medical Scholars offers a minor in interdisciplinary studies on medicine to a small cohort of aspiring physicians. McCollough scholars form a living-learning community investigating big picture questions about the art of medicine. The McCollough Scholars program would likely be of interest to incoming biology majors interested in medicine. In this collaborative work, Dr. Chtarbanova and colleagues discover a novel mutation in the gene brat, that leads to the formation of brain tumors and progressive, age-dependent neurodegeneration. Although cancer and neurodegeneration appear as two very different diseases, they share the disruption of common cellular pathways. This novel fly mutant could serve as an excellent model to further dissect the molecular mechanisms that underlie both conditions, opening novel avenues for the treatment of both cancer and neurodegenerative disease. The National Science Foundation has funded a $1.8 million Dimensions of Biodiversity award to UA faculty Carla Atkinson and Jeff Lozier and collaborators at the University of Mississippi to study the evolutionary ecology of freshwater mussels. Learn more about the project at http://mussels.ua.edu/.

Although flies, mice, and rabbits might be the first laboratory research organisms that come to mind, the Laboratory of Evolutionary and Integrative Physiology led by Dr. Stephen Secor employs an atypical but very useful laboratory species – the Burmese python – as a research model. Learn about this remarkable species and how the Secor lab is leveraging it to understand molecular mechanisms of cellular growth and functional remodeling in this recent feature in Lab Manger.
