McCollough Institute for Pre-Medical Scholars announcement

The McCollough Institute for Pre-Medical Scholars offers a minor in interdisciplinary studies on medicine to a small cohort of aspiring physicians. McCollough scholars form a living-learning community investigating big picture questions about the art of medicine. The McCollough Scholars program would likely be of interest to incoming biology majors interested in medicine. More details are available on the program’s website: https://mccolloughscholars.as.ua.edu

Chtarbanova Lab examines link between brain tumor and neurodegeneration in the model organism Drosophila

In this collaborative work, Dr. Chtarbanova and colleagues discover a novel mutation in the gene brat, that leads to the formation of brain tumors and progressive, age-dependent neurodegeneration. Although cancer and neurodegeneration appear as two very different diseases, they share the disruption of common cellular pathways. This novel fly mutant could serve as an excellent model to further dissect the molecular mechanisms that underlie both conditions, opening novel avenues for the treatment of both cancer and neurodegenerative disease. Congratulations to the 2018 BioFest winners!

BioFest is an annual Department of Biological Sciences tradition where new students are welcomed and current students present their research via a poster colloquium. We are proud of our talented and hard-working students and pleased to acknowledge these winners: 1st place – Identifying Epigenetic Modulators of Neuronal Resilience in the C. elegans Dopaminergic System. Anthony L. Gaeta, Nathan A. Moniz, Dr. Kim A. Caldwell, and Dr. Guy A. Caldwell. 2nd place – Constructing a graphical (network) model of the Drosophila […]

Dr. Secor’s Laboratory of Evolutionary and Integrative Physiology featured in Lab Manger

Although flies, mice, and rabbits might be the first laboratory research organisms that come to mind, the Laboratory of Evolutionary and Integrative Physiology led by Dr. Stephen Secor employs an atypical but very useful laboratory species – the Burmese python – as a research model. Learn about this remarkable species and how the Secor lab is leveraging it to understand molecular mechanisms of cellular growth and functional remodeling in this recent feature in Lab Manger.
