Research Interests

I am retired, but my interests continue to be focused on stream, river, and wetland ecosystems, especially those in the Southeastern United States.  Much of my work has emphasized the theory and practice of estimating invertebrate production, but also population dynamics, drift dynamics, predator-prey relationships, and the application of secondary production in the quantification of flow food webs.  I also have had a long-time interest in the conservation of rivers, as indicated by my publications of the first (Benke and Cushing 2005) and second (Delong, Jardine, Benke, and Cushing 2023) editions of Rivers of North America, as well as Field Guide to Rivers of North America (Benke and Cushing 2010).
